Research is Key!

My group is making our music video to the song "brutal" by Olivia Rodrigo. This song is a pop song, and in other music videos for Olivia Rodrigo songs, as well as similar pop songs, there is often an early 2000s feel with a lot of bright colors and different scenes.

  • The subjects in these videos are often with a significant other or friends, doing activities.

  • The setting is also usually in a busy or central area, like a school, fair, or mall.

  • The subjects are seen doing choreographed dance, especially background dancers if the main subject is not

  • The filming often has elements of editing to make it look like it was filmed on a camera from the early 2000s, especially in Olivia Rodrigo music videos

  • The songs in these videos are generally about heartbreak or relationships, so that is seen in the video

  • This means there is often times scenes of couples, or evidence of past relationships

  • Costumes in these are up to date with pop culture and modern times, being very modern

  • Costumes could also be used to fit and emphasize a theme or setting, like a school uniform or an outfit from a previous decade

  • Props are video specific, but often show fancy cars, cellphones, big houses, and film cameras

  • The actors appearance is usually a strong emotion throughout, such as angry or heartbroken

  • This is emphasized with dramatic effects like fire or rain

  1. A convention and code in Olivia Rodrigo song music videos is the dramatized emotions. You will very often see big choices in these videos to emphasize an emotion they are portraying, such as a wall of fire behind the subject when they are angry

  1. The basic format of the music video is another convention. The videos move with the song through a rising action, climax, and falling action as the song goes through beginning verses, a bridge, and an ending. The most chaotic or dramatic plot point reveal in the video will be around them climax, or bridge, of the song.

  1. The singer being the main character of music video is also a convention across Olivia Rodrigo music videos, as well as other music videos for modern pop songs. If it isn't the singer, then it is another famous person or dancer.
